Foothills slope

The gently rolling hills to the west of Bornheim with their gardens and fields, church towers and villages are reminiscent of Tuscany from afar and are perfect for hiking.

Facts

  • Hilly landscape with viewpoints
  • Alternation between landscape and settlement
  • Fruit, vegetable and wine growing

And indeed, the Romans already cultivated wine here. The landscape takes its name from the foothills, the eastern edge of the Ville, which runs parallel to the Rhine from Bonn via Bornheim to Hürth. Wine was still being grown on the foothills in the 19th century. The growth of the towns then made fruit and vegetable growing more profitable and, as in the plain, high-yield foothills agriculture developed. The loess soil here is also so fertile that lettuce and vegetables, for example, can be harvested three to four times a year.

The "rebel blood" from Bornheim, a wine made from blackberries
blackberries, is known far beyond the region for its
its taste and its effect.
Recently, a few young winegrowers have started
have started to grow them again.

From the hills of the foothills, especially from the "Heimatblick" location, there is a wide view over the Rhineland and the Bay of Cologne. The air is fresher here and the residential areas are popular. The Romans already took advantage of this location: most Roman estates, so-called "Villae rusticae", are located in the foothills. In Bornheim-Botzdorf, you can visit the well-preserved remains of one such villa.
