Green C

Mondorf ferry

The redesign of the Mondorf Rhine ferry landing stages is the key project of the Green C - this is where the link originates and branches out to the east and west.

Facts

  • Building a bridge over the Rhine
  • "Origin" of the link
  • Redesigning the banks and landing stages

The ferry, as a connecting element, creates a bridge across the Rhine and enables a continuous connection between the Siebengebirge Nature Park and the Rhineland Nature Park.
There has been a ferry connection between Mondorf and the Bonn side of the Rhine for many centuries. Initially, people and goods were rowed in wooden boats, but in the course of industrialization, the ferry service was equipped with motor ferries. The Mondorf ferry was family-owned for centuries. In the 1960s and 1970s, more bridges were built across the Rhine and Sieg rivers and the Mondorf ferry seemed to be doomed. But the support of private investors saved the ferry.

By integrating it into the Green C, the Mondorf ferry area was given a new quality of life. The landscape around the ferry landing stage, the Estermannufer up to Bonn's city limits to Hersel and the Milchgasserweg up to the Auenweg connection were redesigned. Two Rhine terraces with seating walls make it possible to rest and enjoy the view of the opposite bank. Benches, swivel loungers and picnic areas were also created.

The design of both sides of the Rhine corresponds in terms of design language, choice of materials and furnishing elements. This makes the connection or "bridging" of the Green C clear. As at every special point of the Green C, an information board has also been erected here to inform visitors about the project.
